Lowell Richards Memorial Fellowship

Stephen Donovan named 2014 Lowell Richards Fellow

The Lowell L. Richards III Fellowship for Leadership and Public Service was established by MBHP’s board of directors to honor Lowell Richards–founding member and co-chair of the board of directors from 2000-2012–to recognize his twenty-nine year dedication to MBHP’s mission and to continue his legacy of leadership and public service.

Fellowship participants gain access to:

  • Challenging projects in leading private, public, or nonprofit organizations;
  • Support and mentoring from experts in the field;
  • Opportunities to gain marketable skills;
  • Build interest and knowledge in potential career or area.

Thanks to a generous donation by State Street Corporation, matched by several founding contributors, MBHP named Kate Cahalane its first Lowell Richards Fellow on March 15, 2013–Lowell’s birthday.

Cahalane, a graduate of University of Vermont and a former youth mentor in the DREAM program, was hosted by Massport and assigned to the Economic Planning and Development department where Lowell was director for more than ten years. While there, she researched and wrote the report: Affordable Housing in Boston: A closer look at the role of a transportation agency in community building. Following her eight-week fellowship, she joined AmeriCorps and is now back with DREAM as an AmeriCorps VISTA.
